This 3 hours FREE hiking tour climbs Jiantan Mountain, passing through its tropical forest, temples and abandoned bunkers and military checkpoints reminiscent of more obscure days gone by. Enjoy with us this hike and the amazing views of Taipei City, surrounding mountains, rivers and even the airport from its many viewpoints. The tour will end by riding rental bikes (YouBike) along Keelung riverside to Yuanshan Park.

We’ll start this free hiking tour of Jiantan Mountain 劍潭山 in the MRT Jiantan exit 2, where we’ll meet at the appointed time. From here, we’ll head towards the Jiantan Mt. trailhead. Once in the trailhead, we’ll start our hike by ascending several steps that will bring us inside the forestry passing several temples and junctions. During this hike we’ll pass several viewpoints that will allow us to observe the city and its surrounding rivers and mountains from different angles.
As we’ll be getting closer to the main viewpoint, called “old place” or laodifang 老地方, we’ll learn about the past military history of this area as we’ll be able to observe the various abandoned bunkers and military checkpoints.
Once we reach laodifang, get ready to enjoy amazing views of Taipei’s Songshan airport and Xinyi business district with its skyscrapers in the background, mixed with the Keelung river and the forest that covers Jiantan Mt. This place is known as “old place” due to be a famous spot in the past with beautiful scenery for daily climbers who liked to come here in the mornings and practice any kind of exercise, mainly Tai-Chi.
Once we take a good rest, we’ll head down the mountain through the forest. Here we’ll enjoy a dirt path only for ourselves as most of people who climbs Jiantan Mt. will stop in laodifang and go back to the trailhead. Slowly going down, we’ll end the hike section in Dazhi district where the Miramar Ferris Wheel 美麗華 is located altogether with the Ministry of National Defense and the Dazhi bridge.
At this point we’ll be back to the city, next to MRT Dazhi station. It’s from here, and if the remaining time is enough, that we’ll start our bike section by riding YouBike bikes along Dazhi bridge to cross Keelung river and follow the riverside until we arrive at Yuanshan Park.
Alternatively, if we are feeling tired or time is not enough for the bike section, we can end our FREE hike in the MRT Dazhi station.

If you are not able to attend the tour, please cancel your reservation, otherwise the guide will be waiting for you.
Either we use private transport or public transport, be ready to walk certain distances. Some tours or experiences will be hike related as we’ll be in the mountains. In addition, Taiwan is a tropical island with heat and humidity most of the year.

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Monday (Nov. 28, 2022) announced that it will discontinue the outdoor mask mandate on Dec. 1. Still, we ask everyone to follow the rules of the country when it comes to COVID protocols and wear a mask in indoor environments like stores, shopping malls and private/public transport.
