Located just over an hour by bus from the center of Taipei, Jiufen is a small town nestled in the northeastern mountains of Taiwan, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The name of the village, “Jiufen,” translates to “nine portions” (jiu fen) and was given because it was originally inhabited by only nine families.
This charming little village is a major tourist attraction not only for its undeniable beauty but also because it has served as the backdrop for several films. It also provided inspiration for creating some scenes in the animated film “Spirited Away” by the Master Miyazaki. Jiufen’s allure lies in its numerous food and sweet stalls, as well as its many tea houses, making a visit to Jiufen almost a must.
A highly recommended option for a day trip from Taipei is to combine Jiufen with the nearby gold mine in Jinguashi and the Yehliu Geological Park, two other points of interest located on Taiwan’s northern coast. You can learn more about our private trips to Jiufen by following the link.

The beautiful landscape of the sea and mountains from Jiufen’s privileged location offers stunning views and photo opportunities, especially if you stay until sunset. The bustling market, along with the colorful traditional streets and red lanterns, gives Jiufen a very special charm.
Jiufen is renowned for its artisan shops, teahouses, and the bustling market on its main street. Along the main street, hundreds of food stalls of different kinds are lined up, and you’ll need to come with a hungry appetite if you want to try all the enticing dishes, as there are plenty of them. Pineapple cakes, rice cake with meat filling, and mochis stuffed with various flavors are some of the delights you must taste before leaving Jiufen.
